Battery Backup for your laptops

Battery backup is one of the key things for a notebook/laptop. Most people strongly believe that battery backup is only affected by the number of cells in your battery. Which is true, but at the same time there some easy things you can do to ensure that you get the most out of your notebook battery.

Here are some tips which you may find helpful to get 100% out of your laptop/notebook..

  • Reduce the brightness: Display alone consumes more battery than the rest of your laptop. So if you need to increase the battery backup time it is a good idea to reduce the brightness of your display. Reduce the brightness to a level where you are comfortable & it does not strain your eyes.
  • Switch off wireless: Every laptop today features wireless connectivity & wireless radios consume energy. Be it Blue-tooth or Wi-Fi everything requires power, so be choosy about what you want & switch off the unwanted. Most laptops come with a dedicated button exactly for this reason. Besides the battery it would also ensure that your device is more secure.
  • No multitasking: If you are working on many applications at the same time on your laptop, the memory & CPU usage increases. This in turn increases the power requirement of your laptop. Close any applications you aren’t using. It is more efficient to run a single application at a time, then close it & open a new one when you want to work on something else.
  • Reduce the performance: If you have to do general computing while traveling then you don’t need high performance. So to make your laptop utilize the battery in the best possible manner, keep your laptop on balanced or battery saver mode. You can change the power settings by clicking the battery icon on the task bar & then selecting power saver or balanced from the options.
  • Remove external devices: External devices like an external hard disc drive or your internet data card or even you flash drives, all require power to function, which is drawn from your laptop. As long as you are connected to a power source it is ok to use these but while your laptop is on battery, try minimizing the usage of external devices.

Good luck & happy power saving

Wintel : Windows 7 + Intel to give laptops 50% increase in battery life!

Recently both  Micforsoft  & Intel have comeup with a new combo offer which will help you to save power and thus will increase your laptop battery life !!!!  Windows 7+Intel= “Wintel“  a new innovation from the partnership have promised to offer you most reliable power cutting solution for your notebooks thus a better  battery life…..
In a demonstration of two identically configured ThinkPads T400s, Intel and Microsoft claimed that a Windows XP SP2 machine consumed on average 20.2 watts, while the Windows 7 machine consumed 15.4 watts. That translated to about 1.4 hours of additional battery life,
You can imagine that tweaking an OS can offer you such a good gift which will help you in power efficiency !!!!

Actually, both Microsoft & Intel are investigating on the power consumption related to hardware, CPU usage, resource hungry processes, BUS speed etc.  and are updating themselves thereby working on them from firmware as well as software level to improve.  Windows 7 OS is more advance operating system which is using a technology called ” timer coalescing “  which will minimize the time in which the processor enters a high-performance, full-power state. hence will reduce power consumption. Also Intel has made a dedicated chip for this called Westmere that is running in compatibility with Windows 7. It has hardware acceleration technique too that is significantly improving the encryption algorithm runtimes namely AES.  This has result in the ability to boot the operating system within 11 seconds.

The bottom line :- Intel and Microsoft are coming with a joint venture that will help batteries to last much longer. Its just a few days wait ( wait till end of October 2009 )  for getting this  dedicated Wintel machines which will have greater battery life and will operate for longer hours.
