Solving jailshell enable hosting account errors.

Not all hosting service provider offers you shell access on their shared server but they may provide you jailshell access for your hosting account. Jailshell access is very limited shell that allows you to logon to hosting server via SSH. You have limited access to your home directories and don’t have any access for other accounts on same server where your account is hosted. Sometimes few hosting accounts having jailshell enable may get a error -jailshell: fork: Resource temporarily unavailable for few most common frequently used commands such as ls, cat etc… when fired from console. You can easily correct this error you need to login to your WHM, Suspend account which is having this error and again unsuspend the same account having this issue. Thus jailshell of account can be reset by Suspending/Unsuspending of account which removes such error.

How to set Hostname for your VPS/Dedicated server.

Finally you ordered your dedicated server and you want to start using it but unfortunately you are not much technically strong for managing it properly. Though your server provider will offer you technical support but as a webmaster you should need to know few basic things. One of them is setting up hostname for your server.

Your hostname must be FQDN : Fully Qualified Domain Name. Your server hostname is the name of your server that you want to set. Hostname is the your server’s name that you want to set. If you want to use server.domain.com then you should always set hostname for the domain you are owner.

1) Log in to your WHM control panel : http://IP/whm >> then edit dns zone >> you need to select your domain name.

Then server IN A { Use your server IP }
www.server IN A { Use your server IP }

If you are using shell then you just need to amend following file # vi /var/named/domain.com.db using

server IN A { Use your server IP }
www.server IN A { Use your server IP }
Just save this file and reload named using #service named reload
#rndc reload domain.com

2). You can also set hostname using following WHM >> Basic cPanel/WHM Setup >> Hostname. You can do it using command line prompt for this you need to login to shell /server as a root then run hostname server.domain.com { here the second parameter will be the hostname that you want to set }

3) You need to verify if you have set hostname correctly using /etc/hosts and need to confirm that you have used correct hostname and havnt done any spelling mistake or any other mistake. If anything is set incorrect while setting hostname then few services for your server may get affected/not work properly which are related to hostname.

4) Finally its time to fire “hostname “ command on server to crosscheck if you have set your hostname correctly and thats all, you have set Hostname successfully

Database backup usign PhpMyAdmin

Taking backups and restoring databases using phpmyadmin :

You can easily take backups your website databases usign Phpmyadmin all you have to do is to login to your control panel and reach Phpmyadmin screen, select database you want to take backup of. choose ‘eExport’ tab and scrool down the page and click ‘Save as file’ proceed with clicking ‘GO’ button. Thus you have backup copy of your databases onto your local machine.
Once you have backup copy created of database onto your local machine you can easily restore it anytime you want, you need to login to your cpanel and will have to access PHPMyadmin select the database name which you want to restore from the dropdown list. Just select ‘import’ tab and locate file you wish to restore from your local machine by clicking ‘Browse’ button.
Finally you can restore database by clicking ‘GO’ button and you have done.
All backed-up databases are restored using PhpmyAdmin from your cPanel.

SSH : Secure Shell is a application using which you can log into another computer over a network so that you can execute commands you require on a remote machine. using SSH you can easily move files from one machine to another. SSH protects network from attacks such as IP spoofing, IP source routing, and DNS spoofing. Usually SSH is not offered with shared hosting environment due to security issues but some host do provide it for shared hosting plans where they have few servers where it is offered. Some do provide SSH in more secure format as Jailed SSH.
All data exchange carried out using SSH is in encrypted format which takes place between client machine and server. Most webhost will provide you an interface for SSH access through cPanel so that you can administer it effectively.
You can easily modify/change private keys which are must when communicating through SSH. when you are using private key you are not required to enter username and password when you are logging into your Linux server as such private keys are unique in their nature. Usually you use such private keys when you are running scripts that enquires SSH access to another server.
cPanel also offer you facility to import such private keys when you are migrating your website hosting account from one server or host to another.
Most important to note that you should have enough Linux working knowledge so that you can use SSH efficiently on your shared hosting environment.
